-An oversized unbound folio with four full-color, poster sized (45x75cm) wine region maps, AOC regulations for each appellation, and regional introductions written by local syndicate heads. The text and cartography detail four regions

2.) Bourgueil-Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil - Chinon - Montlouis - Jasnières (Montlouis and Jasnières are insets)

4.) Coteaux de Touraine.
Maps 1-3 include locations of specific vineyards. Much of the text is presented in four languages: French, English, German, Italian. Includes numerous b/w photos of vineyards and countryside. This is a beautiful, detailed and informative work. A subsequent volume entitled "Anjou-Muscadet" (advertised on the back cover) was probably never published separately.

-Sentimentally sketched remembrance of the winemaker and elder statesman of Saumur-Champigny, Antoine Cristal of Parnay. Pen and ink illustrations are by the author. Preface by Marc Leclerc. A recent reprint exists [1993, Nantes: Loire Pour Tous, 200x140, 63p, ISBN 2-9507759, preface by Philippe Auclerc, (NY,*).

CHARPENTIER, C.-M. —Histoire de la vigne dans le Sancerrois. Sancerre: Imp. Coop. Ouv., 1947, 210x130, 8pp, (¶).

-After a brief introduction, the text of this pamphlet is in two parts, "La vigne avant 1893" and "De 1893 a nos jours." Summary of the most extreme weather events, good and bad, from the storms of 1723 to the several fine vintages which began in 1942.

CORDONNIER Paul. — "Les vignes, les vins, les caves de Marçon." Revue Historique et Archéologique du Maine, No. 81, 1947, 240x155, pp.7-12, (¶).

-Presents a winemaking history and cultural description of Marçon, which is situated in the heart of the Coteaux du Loir and the Jasnières districts, just north of Touraine.

-Rémi Flachard's catalog No. 16 describes this as a "MONOGRAPHIE peu connue sur les Vins de Sancerre, Quincy, Reuilly, Coteaux du sancerrois, du Cher et de l'Arnon, et Coteaux Chateaumeillant. L'Auteur était Ingénieur agronome et Directeur des Services Agricoles du Cher." Illustrated.

-A pamphlet publicizing the towns and wines of the Layon of Anjou. 24 towns each have one-page descriptions. For each, a few historical or architectural highlights are presented, as well as a few words about their wines. Two-page center map. Preface by H. Raimbault. Numerous pen-and-ink illustrations.

HUET Gaston. — "Obsèques de Monsieur C. Vavasseur. 6 Février 1950." (unpublished typewritten manuscript), 1950, 6pp., (¶).

-An obituary for Charles Vavasseur, vigneron and owner of Clos du Bourg, who had been Vouvray's mayor for 37 years early in the twentieth century (preceding the 42 year tenure of Huet). Vavasseur played a large part in the reorganization and restoration of Vouvray's vineyards after phylloxera and between the two world wars.

-This slender volume from the Netherlands recounts a voyage through the white wine regions of France. A few shorter chapters are dedicated to the Loire valley regions (Vouvray, Saumur, Anjou). Pen and ink b/w illustrations. A lively travelogue.

-An ambitious, detailed work about the economics of muscadet production. At its core are numerous quantitative studies of the muscadet region's wines, production, surface area, sales and prices, illustrated by graphs and charts. This is a statistical goldmine of gros-plant and muscadet-related information. The author was Lauréat de la Faculté de Droit de l'Université d'Angers, Licencié en Droit, Docteur Ès-Sciences Économiques. Prefaces by M. Abel Durand and M. G. de Couesbouc. A benchmark for the region. The New York Public Library catalog contains this additional note "Thèse, Droit. Rennes. 1953. Bibliography, pp. [201]-203."

-Comparable in scope to Chauvigné's 1909 volume about Vouvray, this monographie of Beaulieu examines many aspects of the town's history, economy and population. Includes an excellent 10 page study of the wines of Beaulieu, including vintage statistics for 1921-1952 (area and production), a brief overview of wine prices from 1750-1921 (24 livres/pipe in 1750, 1000Fr in 1921). Two b/w photos of vineyards, one of which is "Vallon de Martinet". Illustrated. Map. Recent local history is presented as a timeline from 1807-1954. Has an extended list of notable vintages..."Les années marquantes de Beaulieu se trouvent être: 1864, '70, '71, '81, '84, '87, '93, 1900, '01, '06, '14, '19, '21, '28, '33, '34, '42, '43, '45, '47, '49, '52."

- With this publication, Bréjoux set a precedent for many future authors by describing all of the river's major wine appellations in one volume. His clear, informed prose and regional expertise have helped the book age gracefully. It's still a good resource. One caveat: the brief but meaty bibliography contains several innacuracies. Dumay '79, Pomerol '89 and Wilson '98 cite a 1974 edition. Illustrated by Ralph Soupault.

TANGUY Jean. — Le Commerce du port de Nantes au milieu du XVIe siècle. Paris, 1956, in-8º, 102pp., (La).

COUESBOUC G de. — Le muscadet et son vignoble. Nantes: Imprimerie Beuchet et Vanden Brugge, n.d (c. late 1950s), 210x135, 15pp., (¶).

-A short pamphlet containing an essay which promotes the wines of muscadet. The author proudly refers to the crew of the Bathyscaphe submersible, who in a 1948 test off the coast of Dakar drank a glass of muscadet at a depth of 4000 meters. Includes sixteen evocative b/w photographs of the nantais countryside and vineyards as well as a detailed pullout color map of the muscadet region. The full text in three languages; Dutch, German and French. At least two pamphlets with identical titles and cover art were published, each with completely different content. Published under the auspices of the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins d'Origine du Pays nantais.

COMITÉ INTERPROFESSIONNEL DES VINS D'ORIGINE DU PAYS NANTAIS. — Le muscadet et son vignoble. Nantes: Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins d'Origine du Pays nantais (Imprimerie Beuchet et Vanden Brugge), n.d (c. late 1950s), 210x135, 22pp., (¶).

-Entirely in French, this pamphlet takes the reader on a tour of six winegrowing communities and presents a short essay entitled "Les origines de la vigne et du muscadet." The author is uncredited. Published in 1956 or later, this is one of at least two different works which share the same name, cover art and dimensions.

1957

CORDONNIER-DÉTRIE Paul. — "Les vins et les gourmandises des vaux du Loir." Revue de Maine, 1957, t. XXXVII, no. 92, 244x156, pp.124-127, (¶).

-Virtually identical to the 1935 pamphlet "Les vins du 'Vau du Loir'. Le clos des Jasnières et la Chartre-sur-le-Loir" (described above). The author does mention the 1947 vintage in this piece.

1958

LICHINE Alexis. — Wines of France. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1958, 330x250, 27pp., (¶).

-In collaboration with William E. Massee. This is the 1958 printing of the revised 1955 ed. The original ed. was in 1951. The Loire wine information published here is barely worthwhile, though there is an interesting and relatively detailed anecdotal report of the 1893 vintage in Vouvray. Other than that, the author seems to have limited knowledge of the region's wines and appellations, and little interest in delving deeper.

MINOT Paul. — Petit Louis. Vigneron de Pouilly. Paris: Atelier Pompougnac, 1958, 330x250, 27pp., (¶).

-Tells the romanticized story of fictional Pouilly winemaker "Petit Louis" and his life in the vineyards, at home, and in his cave. Luxuriously printed on handmade paper and illustrated with numerous full-page lithographs and artful typographic elements. Limited edition. Loose-bound. Large format. Numbered copies.

-A resource of mind-boggling scope, this scholarly work traces the history of winemaking in France from the earliest existing records through the end of the 1800s. Illustrated. Three broadly defined sections

II.) "Les Grands Vignobles Commerciaux du Moyen Age" ,
III.) "Adaptation de la Production Vinicole aux Besoins de la Société Moderne".
Its comprehensive bibliography (p.677-727) includes a separate section of sources for the Loire valley appellations (p.712-716). There have been reprints, including a 1977 Flammarion ed. [ISBN 2082101746].

CURNONSKY, LAVIN Edwin (translator, editor). — Traditional recipes of the provinces of France. A guide to cooking, wine, and travel. New York: Doubleday & Co., 1961, 200x180, 494pp., (Fr,¶).

-An English translation of Curnonsky's book of recipes. Twenty-nine regions of France are presented. Each section begins with a gastronomic introduction and a selection of typical recipes (quantities have been conveniently converted to non-metric units). Of greater interest to the wine lover are each chapter's accompanying essays on local wines. Knowledgeably written though by no means painstakingly detailed, they convey the essential facts and evoke a historical context for each region. Color and b/w tableside photos of many dishes. [Friedrich refers to the Paris ed. of 1962, "Recettes des provinces de France"].

1962

GIRARD Monseigneur André. — Les vignerons du sancerrois. Sancerre: Société de Presse Berrichonne, 1962, 220x140, 45pp., (La,Vo,Fl,¶).

-Preface by "M. le Comte A. de Vogüé, maire de Boulleret." Paris bookseller Rémi Flachard's catalog No.18 (1999) describes this as a "Petite monographie fort peu connue, illustrée de 6 planches h-t. et 5 Figures dans le texte d'outils anciens du vigneron." It contains three chapters:
1) "Hommage à Sancerre"
2) "La vigne" and
3) "Les vignerons"
This is a thorough, well-documented short history written with the serious reader in mind.

JACQUELIN Louis, POULIN, René. — The wines and vineyards of France. New York: G.P. Putnam, 1962, 250x175, 416pp., (¶).

-A hefty reference filled with statistics and facts about French vineyards. There is much raw information presented here about the Loire vineyards, including lists of A.O.C.'s and their potential alcohol minimums, vintage guides (back to 1834), permitted grape varieties, approved clones, soils and production statistics. -Several wine merchants have written books about Loire wines and winemakers (Lynch, Seely, Yapp). This is an example from the 1960s. Though the author travels the entire Loire, the book has less in-depth wine writing than might be expected. Vigneron Jean Baumard does regale the author with a few interesting anecdotes, including one about a time when demand for dessert wine was so low, he produced a dry wine from his Quarts de Chaume grapes just to have a saleable product. (!)

-Privately published by the author, who was a winemaker in Bonnezeaux as well as Mayor of Thouarçe. Considering the author's profession and place of residence, it is not surprising that this book provides more details about the vineyards of the Layon than it does for those of the saumurois. Commune by commune, the author presents winemaking information and history along with 1966 vintage statistics. He also reprints the official A.O.C. text which created the appellations Coteaux du Layon Chaume and Quarts de Chaume in 1954. There is even a chapter on the local bowling game "le jeu de la boule de fort". This is a personal, quirky, and informative book. Cover is illustrated in color. Fifty copies are numbered.

Every vigneron who tends at least 2 hectares of AOC approved grape varieties is listed, along with each estate's production figures. Needless to say, it is a whopping big list. In addition, every wine-growing village entitled to AOC status is briefly described. There are also numerous short essays on diverse wine-related subjects, old postcard reproductions, descriptions of wine brotherhoods and maps too numerous to count. Much of the text is in both French and English. This helpful reference book at times resembles a scrapbook in its presentation and hodgepodge cobbling together of disparate facts.

-An English-language essay, photocopies of which were available at Domaine Huet in Vouvray. In it, the domaine's winemaker Noel Pinguet outlines his view of biodynamic farming. After experimenting with test plots for several years during the 1980s, he became convinced of the benefits and now uses biodynamic techniques for the cultivation of all of the grapes grown at the estate.

They are beautifully composed and reproduced. A similar set of photos illustrates the pairing of regional wines and food. Concentrates on the nantais, Anjou and the Coteaux du Layon and the wines of Saumur. Though it can stand on its own as a reference, the outstanding photography is what really sets this book apart.

-The author's reflective prose, reminiscent of Gerald Asher, gives this volume a tone different from most Loire wine books. Voss, like others, follows the entire length of the river, visiting winemakers and presenting historical sketches and occasional tasting notes. A broad range of personalities are interviewed, including several négociants (an important sector often neglected in other books). Aside from a few maps, there are no illustrations here. The book relies instead on its thoughtful, considered text. Several useful appendices contain appellation regulations, vintage information and limited travel recommendations.

Though wine and winetasting are important parts of this book, many of the recommendations are not wine related. There have been previous editions, dating back to the early 1980s.

-Written by a retired petroleum geologist, this in-depth look at how soil and bedrock affect wine character makes for fascinating, challenging reading. Begins with a wide-ranging 60 page essay that discusses geologic history, processes and the (known) interactions between soil and vine. Part two then breaks France down into wine regions and examines the bedrock geology and environmental variables of each in relation to viticulture and the wines produced. Wilson relies heavily on Bréjoux (1974) for his Loire chapter. Though clearly more expert in matters rock-related, his book remains powerful reading for those interested in the relationships between earth and vine. Read alongside the roadside itineraries of Pomerol (1989) the two books become an even more potent introduction to the concept of terroir.

The author disagrees with the rigid Appellation Controlée regulations for Coteaux du Layon which he feels promote mediocrity rather than excellence.

-Again teaming up with photographer Patrick Joly, the author has put together yet another pretty coffee-table book about the wines the Loire, recycling text and photos, sometimes verbatim, from his earlier work. Like the others (see Monnier 1994, 1995, 1998), it's quite readable, and Joly's photos are among the best. It would be a more notable text had there been additional freshly-written material.

-A prodigiously detailed, richly layered social and economic portrait of winemakers of the Saumurois and Layon around the time of the civil war of the Vendée (1794), just prior to the French revolution. Many of the texts cited come from documents and manuscripts found in the Departmental Archives of Maine-et-Loire (ADML) and Indre-et-Loire (ADIL). However, the abbreviated "short title" format used in the author's citations limits their usefulness as resources for further reading.

The text is presented in three broad sections:

In addition to its historic bones, the text includes sections on vinification, soil types and a lexicon of regional winemaking terms, as well as group photos of each commune's vignerons, a feat of organization and (probably) skillful negociation. Thorough contact information for the estates is included. Good bibliography. Preface by Laurent Bignolas. A large hardcover.

-Biographical essays of seventy-eight women who are significant players in various aspects of Loire valley wine culture. The personalities come from many fields: estate owners, winemakers, negoçiants, marketers, publicists, retailers, sommeliers, restauranteurs, even historical figures. Each essay is 3-4 pages long, enough to be substantive. Paperback.

-Divided into two parts, part one is an overview of the philosophy and practices of the agricultural method popularized by Rudolf Steiner. In part two the author devotes chapters to regions throughour the world where biodynamic viticulture is employed (ie pretty much everywhere). The Loire chapter (pp234-256) describes thirteen vignerons' experiences, occasionally in their own words. Hardcover.

-A large hardcover coffeetable book filled with nicely printed black-and-white photographs showing a vineyard year in Sancerre, from winter through harvest. The photos illustrate in some detail several underreported aspects of Loire winemaking, namely early pruning, planting of young vines, training the shoots, barrelmaking and the cleaning of equipment.

FREYSSINET Michel — Parlez-moi d'Aunis... des bords du Loir aux bords du Cher...  Vouvray sur Loir: mf Éditions, 2005, 170x240, 192pp.,ISBN 2-9515585-5-4 (¶).

-Delightful paperback about the Pineau d'Aunis grape and those who cultivate, vinify and cook with it. Regions where the grape is cultivated each have chapters: Vallée du Loir, Côteaux du Vendômois, Sologne, and Loir-et-Cher. Fun and informative.

-Over one hundred wine estates, restaurants, fromageries, bakeries and other gastronomic establishments are profiled in this heavy, photo-laden hardcover. There's a lot here and it is nicely done. One pleasant surprise is that the text is printed, in its entirety, in both French and English. Photos by Denis Bomer and pastel illustrations by Alain Bellanger. Hardcover.

NOCHEZ Henri, BLANCHARD Guy — La Loire un fleuve de vins.  Roanne: Thoba's Éditions, 2006, 280x245, 183pp.,ISBN 2-916393-07-2, [bib] (¶).

-The upper reaches of the Loire were an important transport route for wine until the rise of the locomotive. This text explains how the Loire carried wines from the Rhone, Roannaise, Forez, Auvergne, Mâconnais, Beaujolais, Languedoc, Pouilly and Sancerre all the way to Orléans as they made their trip to Paris. -A renowned angevin vigneron tells the story of one of the most renowned angevin vineyards, including details of how the proprietors of the Quarts de Chaume vineyard battled for an A.O.C. of its own. Softcover. From the author's avant-propos:

"Le vin des Quarts de Chaume est une des gloires ligériennes du vignoble français.

Il a forgé seul, durant des siècles, la notoriété du nom de son terroir de Chaume, situé immédiatement autour du village viticole portant ce nom. Il ne peut être dépossédé de ce nom au profit d'un second vin produit dans une aire différente, plus étendue, de seconde couronne vis-à-vis du village de Chaume, ayant le même type et la même couleur mais qui n'a jamais eu le droit légal d'employer le nom de Chaume isolément. -The nine chapters here each describe an aspect of the wines of Pouilly: its history, geology/terroir, the sauvignon blanc and chasselas grapes, a year of vineyard practices, the vignerons, recent developments, the local confrérie, and observations on the wines. A detailed vineyard map shows precise locations of the crus and lieux-dits. Another map shows the soils and substrata in unusual detail. Preface by Denis Dubourdieu. Hardcover.
